MacBook Air

Posted by Louis James on March 20, 2008

Who gives a fuck if the damn thing fits in an interoffice mail envelope? I mean those things are kinda spacious anyway. You can fit about a quarter ream of paper in them. You can actually fit a regular fat-ass MacBook Pro in one. Plus, do the young whippersnappers even know what an interoffice mail envelope is anyway? Stuff a laptop in a standard #10 business envelope and I’ll be impressed.

I bet some douchebag designer is gonna make a fabric laptop shoulder bag to look like an interoffice mail envelope. If so, I’ll expect a check.

iPhone for Business? Hopefully!

Posted by Louis James on March 5, 2008

As soon as the iPone supports MS Outlook, I’ll buy one. It looks like that day is coming. As a small business owner, I need my cellphone to ActiveSynch with Outlook, so my Outlook calendar and phone calendar are on the same page. I also need my corporate email to “push”, Blackberry style, to my phone. I hope Apple delivers these capabilities.

Steve Jobs, since you are reading this, I bet there are many other just like me.  Let’s get Outlook on the iPhone!

MS, Apple, Google, Linux? Some thoughts . . .

Posted by Louis James on March 1, 2008

IMHO:

Windows is the best and cheapest OS for pro apps like Avid, Scenarist, Maya, Photoshop. And for enterprise software and disk raid management. Linux has a long way to come before it will satisfy the needs of the average home user, let alone a hardcore business user. Right now it is a product for enthusiasts & hobbyists, not for people with mission critical work at hand. Apple products are too expensive and don’t allow much modification. They also lack in certain features while offering ones of questionable use. If Microsoft and “Billy” are so evil why is the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation one of the biggest and most effective charitable organization the world has ever seen? Why has Warren Buffet decided to contribute a large percentage of his net worth to the foundation? Microsoft is not standing still, it continues to innovate and adapt in the ever changing tech world. Individuals and business will pay extra for peace of mind and increased productivity. The initial out of pocket cost is not the only cost to measure when considering the efficiency of anything. Google is trying to look like Microsoft just as much as Microsoft is trying to look like Google. Ads in Google Sites, a productivity suite, won’t that be distracting? The last thing a productivity suite needs is distractions! Cloud computing is fine if you don’t give a damn about security, privacy, packet loss, or data mining.

Microsoft Mobile

Posted by Louis James on February 11, 2008

Microsoft is experiencing trouble getting a greater internet presence with its (for now) failed acquisition of Yahoo, but it moves ahead in getting traction in the cellphone OS market. It has agreed to buy Danger, the maker of some of the most user-friendly mobile OS’s, like the one used on the Sidekick. HOPEFULLY Microsoft will use this technology to improve the very clunky Windows Mobile! The iPhone still rules when it comes to ease of use, but it does not let you run Outlook or interface with Exchange Server, two major business applications that most businesses use. I’d like to see the iPhone run Outlook and synch with any Windows PC. And run on 3G networks. Or: I’d like to see the Windows Mobile OS work as easily and fast as the iPhone OS. Why can’t we have the best of both worlds? Units like that would sell like mad!!!!!!

Apple TV still sucks!

Posted by Louis James on January 18, 2008

It still can’t achieve 1080p HD quality, and only achieves 720p HD and 480i SD by skimping on bitrate. It uses MPEG-4 Part 10 (H.264), lol! I mean, guys, it’s all about SMPTE 421M (VC-1) these days. And 4 or 5 bucks to download a file with a 24-hour viewing window? No thanks, even if it were HD. $2 gets you Blu-ray at Blockbuster with no late fees. And $20 gets me all the HD-DVDs I’ve got time for in a month via snail mail from NetFlix. Yeah, I was an early adopter of HD-DVD. I don’t care if it dies and I have to buy Blu-ray soon. HD anything is the only way to use my Sony Bravia to full effect. I’ve gotten ever dollar’s worth of all 350 I spent on my Toshiba player. Upscaling SD DVD players look lame. HD-DVD looks amazing. And Blu-ray is just a touch better still when encoded properly. It’s the best image I’ve seen outside of an editing bay or shooting studio. Ever see HDCAM SR with 4:4:4 color space on a 1:1 pixel HD-SDI mointor? Or else an HD-SDI tap straight off the chip block of a RED ONE camera on a JVC DT-V24L1DU lcd monitor? How about a 4k image stream with about five times the image quality of 1080p HD? I’ve seen these things. They make you drool and wet your pants simultaneously. It’s as if the Ziegfeld did IMAX. It makes HD-DVD and Blu-ray look cheap. It’s like watching VHS once you’ve seen Digital Betacam. Hopefully Bayer compression with wavelet transforms will replace DCT one day, once the hardware can keep up and not cost a fortune. It’s DCT versus DWT for now, but DWT is sure to win in the future. Still, HD-DVD is noticeably better than cable or on-demand HD, which has way too much compression applied for my taste. But even cable’s overly compressed HD kicks Apple TV’s ass when it comes to image quality. And neither can promise zero packet loss, so I’m sticking with optical discs instead of wires for now, ’cause Blu-ray and HD-DVD releases have been QC’d up the wazoo. Apple is becoming the greedy big brother it once rebelled against. But with its newspeak TV ads and hip product design, the sheep stay fooled: “cable tv bad, Apple TV good!” Pay more for less. $1 is too much for .mp3, drm or no, btw! Especially when there’s free p2p content at higher bitrates to be had. When are they gonna start pricing media by the byte? Because once that happens, flat-rate per month access is next, imho. Just look at the telecoms and voice calls for an example. That’s why the telecoms are drooling over video delivery: they can return to the per-call pricing model. Apple has always been good at turning cachet into cash. Who knew the hipsters could be fooled by a black mock turtleneck?

MacBook Air Hot Air?

Posted by Louis James on January 15, 2008

The Fujitsu Lifebook Q2010 is .8 pounds lighter, .9 inches narrower, .01 inches shorter, has Gigabit Ethernet, a fingerprint reader (good to have on an ultra-portable), and a replaceable battery. It also has an optional media dock that adds a dual-layer DVD burner, four additional USB ports, an Ethernet port, VGA out, and it replicates the headphone and microphone jacks.

Why Apple chose to enter this small market sector is odd. And again Apple insists on locking the battery into the unit, ignoring the fact that battery technology advances. Okay, the unit is wireless. Until the battery dies. Then you’ll have to pull out the power cord and find an ac outlet to connect to, rather than swap a fresh battery for a dead one.  And no FireWire port.  That’s right, no FireWire port, so don’t expect to capture footage off your video camera to post on YouTube.  Also, no ethernet port? Did that really save size, weight, and cost? Now you’ll need a wireless network at home and at work. And while away from either, you’re now forced to rely on unsecured wi-fi hotspots, and purchase a cellular network card with monthly data plan for more remote areas without wi-fi. Plus, $3100 tricked out? I’d buy a Mac Pro and an iTouch for the same money!

Apple and Windows

Sure, a new Macintosh can run Windows via Parallels Desktop, but the fine print says: “Requires Windows or other operating system (not included)”.

Apple goes nuts?

Posted by Louis James on August 17, 2007

Apple has “released” its “new” version of iMovie, iMovie ‘08. It sucks. Even Pogue hates it. Ditch iMovie, Final Cut Pro, and move to real video editing software from Avid. They even have a free ($0) program, Avid Free DV which kicks iMovie’s ass.

Avid vs. Final Cut Pro, why Avid Media Composer is better than Apple Final Cut Pro:

It’s a mature product with about two decades of updates and R&D behind it.

Avid makes all their own break-out-boxes.

Avid has superior customer support with 24/7 toll-free phone support.

With MC you can mix resolutions, HD and SD, within the same project. Not so with FCP. With MC you can also do a SD downconvert output while simultaneously outputting HD all in realtime. And this SD stream can be set to reformat the HD aspect ratio by either letterbox, anamorphic, or center-cut means.

MC has world-class video codecs, especially for HD, and has for a long time. FCP’s HD codecs for anything beyond HDV are a joke. With MC, you can transcode your HDV footage up to a stable, professional HD codec that can withstand heavy, multi-layerd compositing and its subsequent rendering – at manageable data transfer rates too. (HDV, while nice and used by pros quite often, is a consumer video standard and employs a heavy amount of lossy MPEG2 encoding and poor color sampling.)

MC has more realtime video effects and options. FCP’s realtime capabilities are really bad. It’s almost like Apple is using a totally different definition for realtime than Avid and the rest of the post-production industry.

The MC user interface has more buttons and is more customizable than FCP. The FCP user interface looks like a toy’s when compared to MC’s. With FCP, there’s like, nothing to click!

Once your footage is digitized in MC, you’re ready to edit, there’s no other processing or rendering required.

With MC, outputting back to tape requires less, if any, prep work or rendering. Almost everything, even lowly DV video over FireWire, has to rendered before output with FCP. How do you meet deadlines with that step looming over your head? I guess there are no FCP systems in newsrooms.

MC has better video effects and compositing and titling right in the program. You’ll use Photoshop, Illustrator, and After Effects far less often, enhancing your creativity and efficiency.

You can color-correct right in MC without having to launch another application and do any importing and exporting.

MC has infinitely superior media management over FCP. FCP media management is a joke. It really is. Honest. Take it from everyone who has used both applications.

MC has Script-Mode editing. FCP has nothing like this. And never will since Avid holds a patent on this technology.

MC has ScriptSynch editing. FCP has nothing like this. And never will since Avid holds a patent on this technology.

In MC, keycodes and foot/frame numbers are all managed within the application, no need to use any other program or any third party plugin(s).

I’m not 100% sure about this one, but I do not think you can import FlexFiles from telecine directly into FCP. I know you can in MC.

FCP has really lousy keyframing in its effects toolset. You cannot even cut-and-paste a keyframe. Just how the hell do you edit without that ability???

FCP lacks any sort of fluid motion in its motion effect capability.

MC’s Multicam feature is far more reliable than FCP’s.

FCP and Apple offer no centralized and shareable media storage for multiple system users, and migrating from one FCP sytem to another is a real pain in the ass. Avid has made all of this simple and reliable. Okay, well, simple and reliable once you know what you are doing!

You can run MC on PCs and Macs. FCP is Mac only.

Apple Inc. Flaw

Posted by Louis James on July 31, 2007

While this lawsuit seems ridiculous, it does point out a major flaw in Apple: its one year warantee.  Yep, only one year coverage on just about everything Apple makes, including its computers.  After that, you are forced to purchase AppleCare to cover your Apple device.  AppleCare is like an extortion/protection racket because, you know, things happen.  Things.  Ya know, bad things.  Just about ever computer manufacturer gives you a standard three year warantee on its high end stuff.  A $3000.00 Mac Pro should come standard with a longer warantee than just one year and a paltry 90 days of phone support.  I mean come on Apple, even Acer and Dell offer three year warantees!  I know a guy who says that one of the reasons the large company that he works for is loath to buy anything Apple is that the bean-counters do not like the one year warantee and AppleCare arrangement.  They also absolutely hate Apple’s stingy standard “complimentary, unlimited telephone support within 90 days of purchase” that you get when when you do not buy AppleCare.  In contrast, HP offers a “3 years parts, 3 years labor, and 3 years onsite service (3/3/3) standard warranty” which includes telephone support.  You’ll need to pay Apple another $250.00 per computer per year to get this.  Cha-CHING!

iPhad?

Posted by Louis James on January 16, 2007

Okay, I’ve come up with a prediction for 2007. Ready, here it goes . . .

The Apple iPhone will be a complete and utter failure.

There I said it. I’m probably the only one alive that has the balls, or stupidity, to make this prediction. Here’s what I base it on:

Touch screen. People like buttons; touch screens take more time to use and are less reliable. They drain power from a device fast. Since the iPhone does not have the ability to swap out a dead battery for a fresh one, this will be a big problem. Also, touch screens offer zero tactile feedback, making them impossible to use without looking at them. I can work my cellphone blindfolded with one hand. Actually having to look at the phone presents a huge problem for use in the car, even if it may be illegal. Early hands-on reports from the New York Times indicate it is hard to type on the iPhone. Not good. By the way, remember the Apple Newton? No? Google it.

Speed dial / voice speed dial. It better have both of these features, especially since it uses a touch screen. Although the software is not yet fully complete, all info indicates the iPhone has neither feature.

Dedicated battery. I cannot believe anyone would make a cellphone where you cannot replace a dead battery with a fresh one. All rechargeable batteries, even the best ones, lose their ability to hold a charge over time. In fact most cellphone makers advise replacing your battery every six months to a year, depending on usage. What was Apple thinking?

3G. The Apple iPhone doesn’t run off a 3G network, a huge oversight!

Synch. Sure it’s great that it synchs with a computer, but it synchs with an Apple computer, which most people don’t have. When I say most people, I mean 90 to 95% of them. Also, the type of people that generally require the convergence of phone and computer are business people, who almost all use PCs, as most businesses use PCs. If a cellphone cannot synch with a PC, don’t expect to sell too many.

Too capable? Just what is the iPhone: is it a pocket Mac that happens to make phone calls, or a phone that happens to be a pocket Mac? The point is, it better perform like a rock-solid cellphone first, and do everything else second. Remember Steve Jobs (who wears the same outfit all the time, black mock turtleneck and jeans, what’s up with that?) calls it three products in one.

It’s ugly. It has a black face in a marketplace that favors silver-toned products. Black cellphones are so 1990’s. Let’s face it, the iPhone has as much sex appeal as a rectangular hockey puck.

Apple makes it. Apple is a company not widely know or accepted as making solid, trouble-free hardware. Also, Apple is not know for fast product line updates and improvements, which is essential for survival in the cellphone handset market. The iPod may be the exception, but Apple has had a dismal track record of build quality in all its computer products. I know plenty of people who’s Macs have died on them while out of warrantee, far many more than PC owners. And I mean died like a blown CPU, not just seized-up hard drives. Or DOA right out of the box! People are already talking about how the smart move will be to wait for the second or third generation iPhone. That’s not good either. Will the iPhone be made of the same easily scratched plastic as the iPod? It better not. I was always surprised that Apple never improved the scratch resistance of the iPod plastic. My new 80GB scratches just as much as the first iPods. That Apple never saw the huge aftermarket of iPod cases as an indication of a design flaw in the iPod is beyond comprehension. This iPhone better be able to take the abuse and use that most people subject their cellphones to. A delicate cellphone that is subject to failure is not the kind anyone wants to own. You know the auto-sensing horizontal or vertical display motion detector will be the first thing to fail.

It’s expensive. $500 and up. As great a company as Apple is, it has never been able to produce mass quantities of devices at low prices. And while the iPod is produced in mass quantities, it’s a rip-off when you apply a price-per-gig metric.

It’s too late. You can easily argue that Apple should have released a phone three to five years ago. So now it’s been introduced and talked all about, but you won’t be able to actually purchase an iPhone for about another half year! That does not bode well.

There’s stiff competition. Don’t expect any other cellphone maker to sit around and do nothing and not release a comparable or superior product. And maybe even before the iPhone actually hits stores.

So there you go, a prediction that runs contrary to all others it would seem. But that’s what being Rev. Irreverent is all about! You heard it here first. Now the iPhone will no doubt have some success, but I doubt it is going to have the kind of success that the iPod has enjoyed, the kind of success that everyone is expecting from the iPhone. So on that level, I feel it will be a huge failure for Apple. As always, watch and learn.

PS: Ain’t it ironic that Bill Gates is out saving the world while Steve Jobs is introducing a new cellphone? I mean Jobs was supposed to be the computer hippie, and Gates the computer establishment. Even the Apple TV ads support this dynamic. Now Gates is out spending his billions of dollars (and Warren Buffet’s too!) on trying to improve the lives of the impoverished, starving, dying, and disease ridden people living in third world countries. Meanwhile Jobs wears his black mock turtleneck and jeans, holds up a cellphone, and talks about revolution.
